A BrickStation guide to keeping young minds happy, busy, and brick-built across Carlisle and Cumbria

If you're already feeling that familiar flutter of “what on earth are we going to do for six weeks”, you're not alone. Every parent, grandparent, guardian, and home educator faces some challenges in Carlisle when the school gates close. They are also thinking about what to do in school holidays for children, if they are trying to balance screen time, sensory needs, the weather, and a budget that doesn't stretch to a vacation abroad. The good news is that Carlisle and the wider Cumbria area are a quietly perfect option for half-term and summer holiday days out, whatever your child needs from their time off school.

A Calm, Creative Alternative: To Soft Play

Not all children excel in a chaotic, vibrant, and uniformly-lit soft play environment; that's exactly why BrickStation exists.

We're an independent, not-for-profit LEGO® themed learning and play centre located on Nelson Street. Our mission is to offer a creative and engaging environment where hands-on play is just as enjoyable as traditional playroom, without the noise that can overwhelm some children.

We offer an extensive collection of LEGO and Duplo bricks, featuring over 250 sets and

40 unique LEGO board games designed for distinct skills across all age groups. Additionally, we give customized autism-friendly sessions to promote inclusivity for families and ensure every child can enjoy play at their own pace. Along with this, our exclusive therapies, like the repetitive nature of building with bricks, are best for neurodivergent children, and the sorting zones are a peaceful retreat for adults.

Quality Time - Not Just Childcare

The school holidays are precious for more than just keeping children occupied; they're a chance to actually spend time together. Building a set side by side with a parent or grandparent, with no phones and no pressure, is the kind of unhurried togetherness that's hard to find the rest of the year. We see grandparents settle in with a coffee while a grandchild proudly takes the lead on a build, and parents rediscovering their own love of LEGO they hadn't touched since childhood. It's quality time that happens almost by accident.

Throwing A LEGO Birthday Party

If you feel worried about a birthday during the holiday season, then no worry!

The BrickStation simply takes the stress out of the birthday party celebration by taking care of excited children, building activities, planning games, and leaving you free to enjoy the birthday party instead of organising it. It’s the perfect option for children who prefer building a spaceship, and we ensure that every child can participate comfortably.

Make Every Day Out A Home Education Win

For Carlisle's home educating families, the holidays don't always mean a complete break from learning, just a change of pace. Our home education hub offers midweek resources and structured activities that blend naturally into a home-ed timetable, covering everything from fine motor skills and spatial reasoning to following instructions and problem-solving. Many home educators build a regular BrickStation visit into their week year-round, not just during holiday periods, and our membership plans are designed with exactly that kind of routine in mind.

Hidden Gems: Unique Holiday Experiences In Cumbria

After exploring the brick attractions, Cumbria delivers a wide range of activities for a complete day out:

Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery: Discover Carlisle's museum featuring Roman history, art, and family-friendly exhibitions.

Carlisle Castle: Explore battlements, dungeons, and plenty of space for kids to run off energy, with nearly 900 years of history.

Hardwicke Circus & Bitts Park: Enjoy picnics, kids' play areas, and a relaxing moment by the River Eden.

The Lake District National Park: It’s perfect for fell walking, lake swimming, or simply wading along the shore.

South Tynedale Railway & Settle-Carlisle: A treat for families who like trains as much as bricks.

BrickStation is the superior way to balance a school holiday, enabling both energetic play and peaceful moments through more creative and relaxed sessions.

Quick LEGO Highlights: Summer 2026

As a LEGO-themed centre, we like to keep half an eye on what's new, and summer 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest release periods LEGO has had in years, with well over a hundred new sets landing across more than two dozen themes.

The headline-grabber for serious builders is the new Lord of the Rings Minas Tirith set, an enormous display model running to over 8,000 pieces. For younger builders and families, there's plenty to get excited about too, with fresh waves of LEGO City, Creator 3-in-1, Botanicals, and Speed Champions sets, alongside newer favourites like LEGO Bluey and LEGO One Piece.

If you'd like to get hands-on with any of the new arrivals before deciding whether they're worth a spot on the shelf at home, pop in and build one in store; it's exactly what our “sets to build” wall is there for.
